Special Issue Information

Dear colleagues,

The sustainability of vegetable production is a critical issue, addressing environmental impact alongside social and economic considerations. Additionally, the adaptation of crops to climate change has become increasingly vital. Strategies that enhance the efficiency and resilience of production systems are essential to ensure the availability of healthy and safe vegetable products.

Climate change plays a decisive role in the sustainability of vegetable growing systems. In the current global context, this topic has become a primary concern for researchers, academia, farmers, and policymakers. Stakeholders are seeking optimal solutions to mitigate the adverse effects of global warming and to adapt horticultural practices accordingly.

Enhanced production of horticultural crops can be achieved through the development of varieties with high ecological plasticity, the implementation of optimized nutrition and irrigation methods, and the use of environmentally friendly inputs to control biotic factors such as diseases, pests, and weeds. Furthermore, harnessing the resilience of horticultural systems and integrating digital tools, including climate prediction models, are critical steps toward sustainable and adaptive vegetable production in the face of climate change.

As part of the EUVRIN 2025 International Conference focusing on vegetable production, protection, quality and postharvest handling, this Special Issue is dedicated to the advancements, challenges, and opportunities in growing vegetable under the influence of climate change.

Manuscripts dealing with the below topics are especially welcome, but are not limited to:

  • Seed development and production
  • Seedling physiology and nursery management
  • Development of climate-resilient vegetable varieties
  • Sustainable practices for nutrition, irrigation, and resource management
  • Integrated pest, disease, and weed management strategies accordingly to climate variability
  • Growing vegetables in controlled environments and protected cultivation systems
  • Soilless and hydroponic systems for sustainable crop production
  • Mitigation of biotic and abiotic stress in vegetable growing systems
  • Strategies for enhancing the quality, health, and nutritional value of vegetable products
  • Postharvest physiology and technology
  • Circular economy approaches: reducing waste, reusing resources, and recycling in production systems
  • Organic vegetable farming and eco-friendly solutions
  • Applications of digital tools, AI, and climate prediction models in horticultural practices

Editorial process and peer review

We consider that the rigor of the editorial process conditions the quality of published articles. That is why we have adopted a peer review process that we want to be efficient, transparent, and honest for authors, reviewers, and editors.
We operate a single-blind evaluation process with at least two independent reviewers, selected according to fields of interest corresponding to the manuscript’s content.
Based on the opinions and evaluations of the reviewers and the overall quality of the manuscript the guest editors make recommendations regarding the acceptance, revision or rejection of the article, as the case may be.
The final decision belongs to the editor-in-chief, who controls the academic quality of the publication process and finally that of the content of the journal.
In short, Two Levels of Editor, Editor-in-Chief (EIC) Makes Final Decision
  • Author Submits
  • Admin Checks and Passes to EIC
  • EIC Assigns to Guest Editor
  • Guest Editor Invites and/or Assigns Reviewers
  • Reviewers Score
  • Guest Editor makes recommendation
  • EIC Makes Final Decision

This Special Issue will feature papers presented at the EUVRIN 2025 conference, showcasing cutting-edge research and advancements discussed during the event. Authors who wish to participate in the conference are encouraged to visit the dedicated page for more information: https://www.iuls.ro/euvrin/.

Important

Authors must explicitly indicate that their manuscript is intended for this Special Issue by selecting the appropriate Special Issue title during the submission process. Failure to do so may result in the manuscript being processed as a regular submission rather than being considered for the Special Issue.
